Manchester United appoint Roberto de Zerbi as new manager, will Howe's tenure come to an end?
last month - 5/25/2025 5:04 PM GMT-3
Manchester United announced their new manager on 4th of January 2026, following the 19th matchday. Though Graham Potter and Ruben Amorim were seen as the most likely candidates, Italian coach Roberto de Zerbi has been picked by the Man United board as the right man to take the team forward. Roberto de Zerbi most recently managed Napoli, with whom he won the Scudetto with in 2024 before leaving in summer of 2025, though only after helping the team to a solid 3rd place finish.

While De Zerbi has been praised for his tactical prowess and the free-flowing football his teams play, questions have arose on whether he is the most suitable manager for the Manchester United job. The board however have publicly stated their trust in him, saying they are ready to help him establish his desired team.

The Tottenham board and Eddie Howe himself recently denounced rumours that his seat was in danger, and the board reaffirmed their trust in Howe. Eddie Howe said after the Arsenal game:

"Rebuilding is a painful process. First we need to establish new roots, and to do that you need to tear out the old ones, even if it hurts. You might falter as you do so, but if your new roots are healthy you will grow even mightier than before. While we are disappointed with how this season has went, we still have a chance at 2 trophies. For now we want to focus on the FA Cup and the Europa League, and next season we will aim even higher."
