The Vibe Stormbirds (13–2) delivered one of the most electrifying performances of the season Tuesday night, defeating the previously unbeaten Mill Rose Cougars (14–1) in a 33–29 nail-biter at Stormbird Stadium. The win not only secured the Stormbirds the No. 2 seed heading into the upcoming NCPFL playoffs but also served as a long-awaited revenge game that lived up to every bit of the hype.
The storyline coming in was unmistakable. Former Stormbirds quarterback Christopher Patel, now leading the Cougars, returned to his old home field to face off against his former teammates. On the opposite sideline, the Stormbirds’ new right guard Jahmeel Davis, who transferred from Mill Rose last offseason, anchored the offensive line that protected QB Treydon Wells all night.
From the opening kickoff, the atmosphere was electric. Both teams traded blows in a high-tempo first half, with Patel connecting on two early touchdown passes for Mill Rose while the Stormbirds’ offense responded behind running back Ronan Hill, who powered in two scores of his own.
By halftime, the Stormbirds led 13-10, and it was clear this was going to be a four-quarter war.
In the third quarter, Stormbirds head coach William Art made key adjustments, turning up the pressure on Patel with an aggressive pass rush led by defensive tackle Ari Reed, the Oklahoma State commit, who finished with two sacks and multiple quarterback hurries. Late in the fourth, the Stormbirds defense made a stand that changed everything — forcing a turnover on downs inside the 10-yard line with just under three minutes to play.
Wells then orchestrated a methodical, clock-chewing drive capped off by a 17-yard touchdown strike to wideout Connor Phillips, giving the Stormbirds a 33–29 lead with just 1:13 minutes remaining.
Patel had one last chance to silence the crowd that once cheered for him, but his final pass — a deep shot down the sideline — was intercepted by cornerback and wide receiver Harrison Bates, sealing the game and sending Stormbird Stadium into chaos.
“Man, that one felt personal,” said Wells postgame. “They got us last year, and everyone knew what this meant. We weren’t letting them walk out of here undefeated.”
For the Stormbirds, the win not only avenged last season’s loss but also showed how much the team has grown on both sides of the ball. With the No. 2 seed locked in, Vibe now sets their sights on a deep playoff run — one that might just lead to a rematch down the line.
“This team has heart,” Coach Art said. “They earned every bit of that win tonight. We’ll enjoy it for a moment, then get back to work.”
The Cougars, now 14–1, will regroup and still enter the postseason as one of the top contenders. But for now, the night belongs to the Stormbirds — a statement win, a playoff boost, and a little bit of redemption under the Owasso lights.
