APL Matchday 1 - What to expect (Part 2)
last year - 7/1/2024 2:05 PM GMT-3
AFC Kutsu - Kaigan Athletic
Last season, Kutsu snuck into the playoff spot after Shizukesa Town unexpectedly lost to Zangai Town, and then beat DFC Takai in the actual playoff. Their fans expect a similar thing this season - a last minute jump to safety. Kaigan finished slightly under expectations, and their fans are hungry for something better than a 6th place finish.
The Kutsu manager went into detail with their plans: "On paper, we are the weakest club in the league, so we must defy the expectations. Our current objective is to stabilize ourselves in the prem, then we could start thinking about Ultimates Cup qualification spots or even direct ones. Kaigan will have something to prove this season, so hopefully we won't fall victim to their upcoming rampage and rescue at least a draw."
The Kaigan manager confirmed Kutsu's manager's words: "Last season wasn't something we should be proud of. While we thankfully didn't do as bad as City, we need to start acting or this season we will end up even worse than them. The players put more effort into the training every day, and you will all see the results of it."
Kyodai AFC - Port Takai FC
Takai will have an opportunity to avenge their defeat in last season's cup, where Kyodai beat them on penalties after goalless 90 minutes. What's more, if they want to win the title this time, this match is mandatory 3 points. Will Kyodai's defense prove too much for Takai once more?
"It's the first game of the season, anything could happen, but realistically, we're playing for a point here. Our first three games are extremely tough, and we need to focus on games against our relegation rivals right after. We won't just throw the game away, but I'm not expecting a miracle." said the Kyodai manager.
Takai's manager's comment was short but clear: "After a disappointing performance in the super cup, we need to up our game. I expect a big result from the guys."
Atarashi FC - Shihon FC
Both clubs are expected to charge for the title, so this is definitely a match to look out for. Last season, Atarashi FC was much better than Shihon FC, this game will tell us who's going to come out on top this time.
"Last season, we finished a single point off the title. While many expect us to repeat this, it won't be as easy as they think. Our city rivals underperformed, this season it could very well be us. We have to win this game if we're aiming for the title again." the Atarashi FC manager cautiously commented.
The Shihon FC manager was honest about last season: "I'm going to be real with you, 4th place wasn't enough. Both the fans and players want more. Our biggest problem were the Shihon derbies, both of which we lost. With those six points, we would've looked much more confident. We weren't good enough away from home either, this match will show whether our changes work."
