1980 to 1985: Competition Begins as Friendlies Description: From 1980 to 1985, it was just a knockout round with 2 matches home and away (quarterfinals to finals). In total, 8 competitors participated. Also, the away goals rule was active, as was the fact that TCL at that time was simply named Friendlies. This ended being a successful project. Done Project: YES
1984: Champions of Friendlies Begin Description: In 1984, the Super Cup was created as a knockout stage format, starting the semi-finals all the way to the finals. Including a 3rd place match. The winners of each TCL would participate in the super cup. In total, 4 teams could participate. Also at that time, it was called Champions of Friendlies 🏆. Done Project: Yes
1986: Expansion to 16 Teams Description: In 1986, the competition was expanded to include 16 competitors but still kept the knockout round, the home and away matches, as well as the away goal rule. (Round of 16—finals). Done Project: Yes
1992: Name change and Transitional to a Traditional Season Description: Then in 1992 the competition changed its name to its current name TCL (The Cars League) and also became a whole season instead of an individual year. In other words it became a 92 - 93 Season instead of a single 1992 season. All mentioned above still remained the same. Done Project: Yes
1992: Name Change for Champions of Friendlies to Super Cup Description: In this year the champions of Friendlies would be renamed to Super cup due to the rebranding of the Friendlies competition to The Cars League. Done Project: Yes
1997/98 - Group Stage Introduction and 24 Teams Description: Then in 97 - 98 the competition introduced group stages that would include 24 participants in a group of 6 and each group would have 4 participants. It meant that the top 2 from each group would qualify to the round of 16 and the top 4 of 3rd place as well. The knockout stage remains the same.
2000s
00/01: Expansion to 32 Teams and more Groups in Group Stage Description: Then in 00 - 01 season the competition evolved into 32 participants which meant that now 8 groups would be available instead of the 6. There would still be 4 participants per group and only the top 2 from each group would qualify to the round of 16. The knockout stage remains the same. Done Project: Yes
2000: More teams From other countries Description: The TCL as it expanded to 32 teams has decided to invite other countries as well to participate in the tournament Done Project? - YES
2012 - Super Cup Expands to 8 Teams Description: The super Cup Expands to 8 teams meaning now the winner of TCL along with the 2nd best team that season, get to play at the Super cup. Quarterfinals was introduced as a result of the 8 teams Done Project? - YES
2019/2020 - Coronavirus Period Description: Then in 19 - 20 because of Coronavirus only the group stages got complete and The knockouts would have to be played in another time when that such time appeared the competition went fast. To save time only one leg was played per match and no away goals was put. It also resulted in the first single final instead of the traditional 2 legs. Done Project: Yes
2020/2021 - Removal of Away Goals Decision in Knockout Stages Description: Then in 20 - 21 the competition announced that it would make major changes for the following years which included the removal of away goals like they did on the last season but this time it will be permanent meaning if both teams were tied they would go to penalties instead of depend of the away goal rule. Done Project? - Yes
2024/2025 - Expand to 36 Competitors and New Group Stage Format Description: As per said the project involves expanding the group stage format from 32 to 36 Competitors. Meaning a 8x4 Group Stage Format would be replaced by a 6x6 Group Stage Format. This will mean that the top 2 from each group would automatically qualify for the round of 16. While the 4 top third placed positioned teams would advance via goal difference to the round of 16. Done Project? - YES
